Dangers of Over-Optimization

I have been talking or rather writing a lot about search engine optimization and how it can help your website or blog. A lot of information about it is freely available all over the internet. Now, there’s one thing that we don’t speak so often of and from which you should be very careful. Like we always say, don’t overdo it.

If proper SEO can help your search engine ranking, rest assure that over-optimization can destroy it.

That’s right, doing too much good things for your site is bad because it’s unnatural. Although SEO helps to rank well in the search engines, one must rest assure that search engines don’t like those manipulations.

Like I try to emphasize often, there’s a fine line between optimization and spam…

When you over-optimize you can easily fall into the spammer criteria, even without you noticing it or having any intention to do so.

Google 950

Like people, search engines don’t like to be told or forced to do something, if they push you in one direction, you are likely to go the other way. It’s the same with the search engines.

If your optimization doesn’t look natural to the search engines, they will feel that you are trying to influence them and they will penalize you for it, like the infamous Google 950.

What is Google 950? Simple, the Google algorithms check your site for potential spamming within your on-page optimization. If you are considered as a potential spammer, your ranking will drop around 950 places (where the name). That’s quite bad…

Clearly, the goal of Google is to eliminate as much trash sites from spammers as possible and we can’t blame them for that. In fact, if you look at the results around the 950, they are doing a pretty good job. Unfortunately, good innocent website do get caught in the net too from time to time.

Note that the Google 950 algorithm is automated and not human reviewed.

Just know that you don’t want to be one of those unfortunate website.

Accidental Over-Optimization

Of course, since you are reading my posts, I know for a fact that you are not a spammer type, so why should I warn you about it? Like I said before, it is very easy to have a site that looks like spam for the crawlers, even without your intention.

Let me illustrate this for you. Imagine you are optimizing your site for “keyword analysis”, without spamming or using black hat SEO, you would optimize your site naturally as follows:

  • Your Page Title would be “Keyword Analysis”
  • You would have “Keyword Analysis” in “H1″ title for your content.
  • “keyword analysis” would be spread all over your page.
  • The “alt” and “title” tags of your picture would also include “keyword analysis”.
  • You would also have navigation links that starts with “keyword analysis” like “About keyword analysis”, “My Keyword Analysis Services” etc…
  • Your HTML pages names may even include “keyword analysis” like “about-keyword-analysis.html”.
  • You may also offer additional “Keyword analysis resources”

Well, all these optimization are perfectly legitimate and in no way black hat SEO, but try to look at it from a bit further, from a crawler point of view…

Your site looks like a spammer website trying to push with his stuffing of “keyword analysis”!

So how can you prevent this?

SEO Going Natural

Like I said before, the best SEO is the “natural” one with a small twist only. Do work around a specific keyword, but just don’t overdo it.

Here are my recommendations:

  • Do have your keyword in your Page title.
  • Do have your keyword in your content title.
  • Do give images their real name. If one of your images is about a blue landscape, don’t call it “Keyword Analysis” call it “blue landscape”.

For the rest, do write your content naturally. The reason why I say that is not only you are unlikely to over stuff your keyword by writing naturally, in addition you’ll provide good alternative keyword terms for your site.

In Conclusion

By writing naturally, you’ll use your keyword “keyword analysis” but also variations like “search terms” or “keyword study” and many other variations that are as relevant to the search engines than for your readers, and best of all your won’t be tagged as a spammer!

Let your content rule!

The SEO Rip-off Search Engine Optimization

I decided to write this article as a result of many e-mails. It seems more and more people are victims of bad SEO. The main complaint is that they are paying entirely too much for little or no results. In addition, many are in the grip of bad SEO practices. If you plan to rent a pro SEO in the future, I suggest you use this article as a set of guidelines.

Before going to any person or business Seo Services , proceed as follows:

A) Learn how to set up and tested an SEO firm before you negotiate.

Do they have a strong client list under their belt?

Are they published?

B) Consider their portfolios.

What kind of results have they produced?

Contact a few of their customers. Are they satisfied with the work done?

C) To review and confirm their methods?

How are they going to optimize your site to access your keywords?

Did they use organic methods? Some individuals or companies use doorway pages, hide text in the background, use the re-orients the blacklist and other methods. Stay away from these values.

D) Get at least three different proposals for SEO.

Look carefully each. Are there any similarities? Proposals will help you to see which companies are honest and who are trying to sell you something you do not need.

What is the cost? The cheapest is not always the best, however, the highest price may not be attached to a comprehensive and viable course of action. Try to find to find a person or organization that will give you what you want in your SEO budget.

E) of the contract, contract, contract.

Get everything in writing. Search on the document carefully. Make sure it covers everything you mentioned, including methods of achieving your desired results. Have copies signed by the two sides. If employment is a big, you may want to consult a lawyer.

F) Clearly state the terms of payment.

While most SEO shall do no work for free or agree to a salary scale for results, many SEO professionals will not shy away from a more performance series of incentives. I am not a strong supporter prepaid contracts .. Most SEO professionals will abide by the 50% front, 50% on completion norm. Make sure that all the financial terms are clearly set out in your contract that the real work. This will protect all parties involved in a case where the expectations are not met.

In all, try to do your best to educate you on SEO. Have a basic knowledge of the terminology and SEO Expert SEO methodology. Anyone offering SEO should not have a problem explaining how they intend to achieve results. If they fail earn your trust or raise a red flag for whatever reason, keep searching. You will eventually find someone who will help you achieve your goals for a fair price. Happy hunting.

How to Make Serious Money With Article Marketing (1)

Posted by Dave The Seo Fool on May 1, 2009  |  No Comments

By Alex Cadens

Article marketing is often accused of not having the ability to help you scale up your business, and such accusations usually come from those that prefer PPC or other “fast track” ways to drive traffic to their webistes or blogs.

I have often read or heard people say that with article marketing you cannot expect the same rate of growth in your business as you would with a good PPC marketing campaign, and up to some point they may be right.

However, you have to consider that when you set out to start a PPC campaign with the goal of scaling up your business you certainly could hit big and make a lot of money, and I mean thousands of dollar in just a few days, but you will surely be spending another few thousand dollars in PPC costs to achieve that, which always leave the possibility of your campaign ending up being more expensive that what you earned in commissions.

Make no mistake, the folks that manage to make $50,000 per month in commissions using PPC, quite often spend over $30,000 to $40,000 in order to do that, so yes, that way to go can be profitable but you definitely need an appetite for risk and some serious cash to spare.

I do not discard PPC advertising because there is no denying the potential it has to deliver quick results, I just have a preference for article marketing which will certainly be a slower way to make things happen, but it also has three distinctive advantages over PPC:

1. It is completely free, so your campaigns will cost you only some of your time.

2. The results you will get will be lasting results, because all the content you publish will remain there forever driving traffic to your websites.

3. You will build permanent one way links to your websites thus boosting your page rank and your chances of sucking natural traffic directly from the search engines.

The only thing you need in order to make article marketing a massive marketing weapon and make a lot of money with it, is to multiply your articles for as many directories you can. In other words, you should submit your articles not only to 2 or 3 article directories, but to 100 or 200 of them.

If you do so, and you write 30 articles per month, you would get around 6,000 new links every month pointing to your site and a truckload of visitors instead of a handful of them. More visitors mean more sales, more leads and ultimately more money.

By now you must be thinking “200 directories? No way, that would take forever” and certainly you would have to be insane to submit an article to 200 directories manually, as you could be spending about 10 hours of your time only with the submission of one article to 200 article directories.

If you really want to make serious money with article marketing, you have to include an article submission software in your toolbox, and not just any article submission software, but one with the ability to do everything automatically. Watch the video at this site, so you get a clear idea of what I mean by “everything automatically”.
